For people who avoid hospitalization during a case of COVID-19, treatment could still cost $1,300 out of pocket, without health insurance.
On average, that cost rises to $127,000 for those who need hospitalization and time in the ICU.
Covered California is urging uninsured and eligible individuals to act now so that they can have comprehensive health care coverage for all of 2022.
Coverage is critical to both getting needed preventive care and covering the costs of unforeseen care.
2022 Covered California Open Enrollment
With the Omicron variant spreading like wildfire, many Californians without health insurance are searching for affordable options.
Covered California open enrollment period ends on January 31, 2022.
During this time, you may want to buy a plan through Covered California if you qualify for a tax credit.
Qualifying usually depends on your income and household size.
Also, you can renew your existing health insurance plan. However, you won’t have to do anything if you want to keep what you have.
If your current plan is changing — for instance, your PCP is leaving the network, or your drugs aren’t in the list of covered medications — then you may want to switch to a plan that best suits your current needs. If you need to change policies, the open enrollment period is the best time.
California estimates that 1.1 million uninsured Californians are eligible for free or very-low-cost coverage via Covered California or Medi-Cal.
2022 Covered California Special Enrollment
Outside of open enrollment, the only other way to purchase an insurance plan is to qualify for special enrollment.
This exception allows you to apply for health insurance if you have had certain qualifying life events including:
- Losing your job
- Moving to a new state
- Getting married or divorced
- Becoming a widow or widower
- Aging off your parent’s plan
- Having a new baby
Note that you will not be eligible for special enrollment if you lost your prior health insurance because you failed to pay your monthly premiums or if you voluntarily cancelled the coverage.
