For 2024, average health insurance premiums for Covered California will increase about 9.6% due to an increase in overall medical and drug costs.
It is the biggest hike in the past five years.
2024 Covered California Open Enrollment
During this time, you can purchase a plan through Covered California if you qualify for a tax credit. Qualifying usually depends on your income and household size.
Also, you can renew your existing health insurance plan. However, you won’t have to do anything if you want to keep what you have. If you don’t do anything, you will be
automatically renewed for 2024 with the same plan and coverage. During Covered California’s Open Enrollment, you have the following options:
Purchase a new insurance plan through Covered California
You may want to purchase a new insurance plan through Covered California if you qualify for a federal tax credit.
Qualifying usually depends on your household income, size and immigration status.
Covered California offers two forms of financial help: premium tax credit and cost sharing reductions.
Renew or switch your current plan
During the open enrollment period, you can renew your existing plan. You won’t have to do anything if you are happy with what you have.
But if your current plan is changing — for instance, your doctor is not in network anymore, or your drugs are not covered by insurance — then you may want to switch to a
plan that best suits your current needs. If you need to change policies, the open enrollment period is the best time.
2024 Covered California Special Enrollment
Outside of open enrollment, the only other way to purchase an insurance plan is to qualify for special enrollment.
This exception allows you to apply for health insurance if you have had certain qualifying life events including:
- Losing your job
- Moving to a new state
- Getting married or divorced
- Becoming a widow or widower
- Aging off your parent’s plan
- Having a new baby
Note that you will not be eligible for special enrollment if you lost your prior health insurance because you failed to pay your monthly premiums or if you voluntarily cancelled the coverage.
